TIPO. Nome de código: Tipo
Due
|
Like the
X1/9 before it, the Uno was a Fiat which was launched with its
development code-name (or at least part of it) attached firmly to its
boot-lid. The Uno spearheaded a major development programme within the
Fiat group, and as such, was developed under the code-name of Tipo Uno,
or Type 1. While this may sound a little prosaic, it could be sign that
Fiat had taken to heart the gentle ribbing it received for developing
the Panda under the code-name Rustica, a name which can surely have had
purely bucolic overtones only in Italy. In fact, the Panda had originally been
labelled Tipo Zero, indicating a blank-sheet design, and the launch of
Tipo Uno was to be followed by that of Tipo Quattro (Type 4), Tipo Due (Type
2) and Tipo Tre (Type 3), in that order. Incidentally, Fiat's naming
policy for these models was a little quirky: while Tipo Uno had been
launched as the Uno, Tipo Due was launched simply as the Tipo. As if deliberately to confuse the issue,
the Tipo Quattro was a joint development programme with Alfa Romeo and
Saab (providing the 164 and 9000 respectively, in addition to the Fiat
Croma and Lancia Thema), thus leading many observers to assume that the
"Quattro" referred to the four marques involved.

Tipo's derivatives
- Fiat’s platform sharing strategy reached
its peak during the Tipo era. Fiat Tipo was launched in 1988 as Fiat’s
Golf-beater. Its simple front MacPherson struts / rear trailing arms platform
was soon found sharing with a dozen models in the group. Here is the complete
listing (loaded from my memory) - Fiat Tipo, Fiat Tempra, Lancia Dedra, Lancia
Delta, Alfa 155, Alfa 145/146, Fiat Brava / Bravo / Marea, Fiat Coupe, Fiat Punto,
Alfa GTV/Spider, Alfa 156 and Lancia Lybra.
- The earliest derivatives did not changed
much the hard points position, hence essential dimensions. These include today’s
145/146, Delta and Brava/Bravo/Marea. They differ from each other by packaging,
styling and suspension tuning. Fiat and Lancia share the same engines and
transmission. Alfa got modified 4-cylinder engines (e.g. with twin-spark added)
and sportier suspension setup.
- 146 is a 145 with longer boot, although
both of them are hatchback.
- Brava is the 5-door version of the 3-door
Bravo. Marea is the 3-box saloon version. Marea Weekend is an estate.
- Alfa GTV / Spider, Alfa 156 and Lancia
Lybra received much more development. GTV / Spider has multi-link replaces strut
as rear suspension. The front still rides on strut. On the contrary, 156 has the
front suspension changed to double-wishbones while using struts at the rear.
Lybra remains strut in front but introduces a new GLA (Guided Lateral Arm) rear
suspension. Again, Alfa has its own engines (including V6s) while Fiat and
Lancia share the same engines. Alfa even got advanced transmission such as
Selespeed. Although there are still a lot of common components sharing among
them, it is no longer adequate to call these cars as sharing platform. |
|
The Punto Mk 1 of 1994 was derived from the Fiat Tipo, with the same
suspension configuration - MacPherson struts at front, trailing arm at
the rear. |

Fiat wants Tipos assembled
in Poland
- Fiat Tipo automobile - Brief Article of Ward's Auto World, July, 1991
by Jon Lowell
Fiat's proposal reportedly includes Polish
assembly of Tipo midsize hatchbacks by FSO at an annual rate of 100,000
units beginning in 1994 and production of Uno superminis at a later
date. All the Unos would reportedly be for the Polish market, while some
of the Tipos would be exported to improve Poland's balance of trade. GM
insiders admit Fiat's offer is substantially more lucrative than theirs,
but the Polish government is reluctant to give Fiat control of its
entire auto industry. (Fiat already has a deal with Poland's other
automaker, Fabryka Samochodow Malolitrazowych.) Poland's car market is
one of the most developed in Eastern Europe, with 1990 sales of 285,000
units. Sales are off this year, but GM expects the market to recover and
grow steadily to 400,000 units by 2000.
